On December 9th, 2023, an EF2 tornado ripped through Hendersonville, TN, causing millions of dollars in damage along Gallatin Road. Among the many losses were two historic buildings that stood side by side, both now condemned and in the process of being demolished. These buildings hold a special place in the hearts of many locals, including my own.
In 1969, my family moved to Hendersonville, and the building on the left, which now houses the Fortune House Chinese restaurant, was home to the first Captain D’s in the area. Back then, in the 1970s, this Captain D’s was the go-to spot for fish and chips. As the years passed, Captain D’s moved down the road and eventually relocated across the street. Yet, the building remained a staple on Gallatin Road, serving as a reminder of those early days in our growing town.
.

The other building, which now houses Little Caesars Pizza, also has a rich history. In the mid-1970s, this was the site of Dunkin’ Donuts, where I worked at the age of 15. It was more than just a job; it was a place where memories were made, friendships were formed, and the community came together over coffee and donuts. To see this building, with all its history, be reduced to rubble is heartbreaking for me and many others who remember it as a cornerstone of our past.
As Hendersonville continues to grow and change, it’s hard not to feel a sense of loss as these buildings, which have been part of our community for so long, disappear. But change is inevitable, and with it comes new opportunities. While we say goodbye to these historic sites, we hold onto the memories they created and the role they played in shaping our town’s history.
