GOODLETTSVILLE, TN — June 20, 2025. The rubber met the road one final time at Rivergate Mall. No, not for shopping—though we’ll miss that too—but for cruising. That glorious American tradition of low-speed, high-style laps around the local mall that defined teenage rebellion, automotive obsession, and questionable muffler choices. And let’s be honest—sometimes questionable fashion choices too.

Rivergate Mall wasn’t just a place to buy a pretzel or lose your mom in JCPenney. It was the hangout. The automotive heartbeat of Goodlettsville, Tennessee. The Daytona 500 of Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. And now, with the mall set to be demolished in July, the last cruise on June 20th was a rolling, roaring tribute to everything that made growing up here a little louder, a little cooler, and a whole lot smellier—thanks to leaded gas and burning rubber.

From Camaro Kings to Station Wagon Warriors

Enough denim and mullets to make a 1986 yearbook burst into flames.

This wasn’t just a car meet. This was nostalgia on wheels. You had everything from the elite to the “bless its heart” variety:

.

  • Chevy Camaros – Z28s with hoods that rattled like a drumline, but ran like a dream.
  • Ford Mustangs – From the 1965 fastback beauties to those 90s GTs that still thought they were tough.
  • Pontiac Firebirds – Including a couple Trans Ams that might’ve come straight outta Smokey and the Bandit.
  • Dodge Chargers and Challengers – Some with modern muscle, others looking like they bench-pressed V8s for breakfast.
  • Chevy Novas, Impalas, and El Caminos – Because nothing says “legend” like a car that’s also a truck.
  • Oldsmobile 442s – Because your granddad didn’t mess around.
  • Buick Grand Nationals – The black sheep that smoked everything else in a straight line.
  • Classic Corvettes – Looking like fiberglass royalty on chrome thrones.
  • Plymouth Dusters, Barracudas, and Road Runners – With engines so loud, they probably rattled bricks off the old mall façade.
  • Hot Rods – The kind built in garages, full of homemade horsepower, elbow grease, and possibly duct tape.
  • Tricked-out Trucks – Lowered Chevys, lifted Fords, and Rams that looked like they moonlighted as monster trucks.
  • Jeeps with lights for days – You could land planes with some of these rigs.
  • Minivans converted into mobile DJ booths – You had to be there.
  • Grandma’s SUV with racing stripes made from painter’s tape – 10/10 for effort.

And then there were the ones only true Rivergate veterans would recognize:

  • The guy still cruising his ’89 Honda CRX with neon underglow.
  • The Mazda RX-7 with more boost than tires.
  • That one dude in the Geo Tracker who somehow always got the loudest applause.

It Wasn’t Just About Cars

This was about community. About growing up in a time where you didn’t need a GPS, just a full tank and your favorite cassette in the deck.

It was where first kisses happened in the back of an F-body. Where friendships were forged over who had the cleanest chrome. And where you learned that revving your engine next to a cop car was not the flex you thought it was.

Parents brought their kids. Kids brought their parents. Some even brought grandparents, who used to cruise Rivergate before it was cool. There were stories told in folding chairs, and debates settled in the parking lot: “Mustang or Camaro?” “LS swap or go home?” “Whose subwoofer cracked the Taco Bell window in ‘98?”

Rivergate Was More Than a Mall

Ask anyone from this side of Tennessee, and they’ll tell you: Rivergate Mall was the spot. You didn’t cruise Wal-Mart. You didn’t cruise Opry Mills (too fancy). You cruised Rivergate. That circle of pavement was our racetrack, runway, and rodeo—sometimes all three at once.

For over four decades, it was tradition. Kids from Goodlettsville, Madison, Hendersonville, White House, Gallatin—even Nashville—would spend Friday nights polishing wheels, blasting Lynyrd Skynyrd, and circling that asphalt like it was sacred ground.

And let’s not forget the unwritten rules:

  • No burnouts unless you wanted a chat with Metro PD.
  • No racing… unless you were 100% sure you’d win.
  • And the golden rule: If you had a hot car, you better park it and pop the hood.

The Final Farewell

June 20, 2025, wasn’t just a goodbye. It was a celebration. The lot was packed. The air smelled like high-octane fuel and BBQ from somebody grilling out the back of their F-150.

Kids snapped selfies in front of chrome-covered relics. Old friends hugged like they hadn’t seen each other since graduation. One guy even showed up in his original Letterman jacket from 1983, bless him.

And when the sun dipped low, and headlights started flicking on, the cruising began—one last time. Bumper to bumper, chrome to chrome, rumbling through a loop that had seen generations grow up and grow into gearheads.

Some honked. Some revved. Some just smiled with a tear in their eye.

Because after all the mall makeovers, store closures, and fashion disasters (looking at you, JNCO jeans), this place still meant something. It meant freedom. Friendship. And four-on-the-floor.

End of the Road?

Sure, the mall’s going away. But the stories? They’re still idling in the minds of everyone who ever cruised that parking lot with a Mountain Dew in one hand and the wheel in the other.

Rivergate Mall may be crumbling, but what it stood for—that sweet southern blend of horsepower, heart, and hometown pride—will ride on.

So here’s to the Camaros, the Chargers, and yes… even grandma’s SUV.
To Rivergate.
To the last cruise.
And to the legends that lived loud, fast, and forever in gear.
