September 11, 2001, is a date that will never be forgotten. On this day, the world changed forever when four planes were hijacked by terrorists and used as weapons to carry out devastating attacks.
American Airlines Flight 11 was the first plane to crash into the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City.
United Airlines Flight 175 followed shortly after, striking the South Tower.
American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.
United Airlines Flight 93, due to the bravery of its passengers who fought the hijackers, crashed into a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, instead of its intended target, which was believed to be the U.S. Capitol or the White House.
Nearly 3,000 people lost their lives in these attacks, including not only Americans but also citizens from over 90 different countries.
What stands out most about that day, however, is not just the horror and loss but also the incredible way people came together. In New York City, first responders—firefighters, police officers, and medical teams—rushed into the burning buildings, risking their lives to save others. Many of them never made it out, showing a level of courage that continues to inspire people around the world.
But the spirit of unity didn’t stop at the city limits of New York. Across the country and even across the world, people from all walks of life joined together to help in any way they could. Blood donation centers were overwhelmed with volunteers, and countless people gave money, supplies, and their time to support the rescue and recovery efforts.
People also came together to comfort those who had lost loved ones. Vigils were held, and messages of support poured in from every corner of the globe. This outpouring of kindness and solidarity showed that in the face of such a terrible event, the world could unite in love and support.
This tragic day was not about politics. It wasn’t about Democrats or Republicans, or about any one nation. It was about humanity.
