Lessons Learned From a 60-Something
When I look back at the early years of my life, I see someone who was happy-go-lucky and full of energy, but not very focused. I didn’t take life or school as seriously as I should have. Instead of preparing for the future, I assumed things would work out on their own. I got married too early, had kids before I was truly ready, and ended up learning many lessons the hard way. Even so, I would never change becoming a parent. My children became the greatest part of my story, even if I had to grow up fast because of it.
But there came a moment, nearly ten years after high school, when reality hit me. I realized I wasn’t ahead in life. I wasn’t even keeping pace. I was running in reverse while the world kept moving forward. At 28, I had to restart, refocus, and take responsibility for building a real career. That wake-up call taught me lessons I wish I had understood much earlier. If I could sit down with my 20-something self, here are the ten pieces of life-changing advice I would share.
- Take Your Talents Seriously Sooner
Everyone has natural strengths. The sooner you recognize and develop them, the sooner your life will move in the right direction.
- Stay Focused in School and Training
Education isn’t just about passing classes. It’s about building a foundation that opens doors later in life.
- Don’t Rush Into Marriage
Love is important, but timing matters. Know who you are before trying to build a life with someone else.
- Kids Are a Blessing but Responsibility Comes First
Raising children young teaches responsibility fast. Prepare yourself emotionally and financially before taking that step.
- Build Financial Stability Early
Good credit, saving money, and planning for the future make life easier. Start small, but start early.
- Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help
Trying to carry everything alone only makes the journey heavier. Mentors and trusted friends can guide you through the tough parts.
- Believe in Your Own Vision
You don’t need permission to follow your dreams. Trust yourself, even when others don’t understand your goals.
- Protect Your Time and Energy
Not everyone deserves full access to your life. Learn to set boundaries so you can grow without distraction.
- Start Your Career with Confidence
The sooner you commit to your path, the sooner success can follow. You have more potential than you realize.
- Never Stop Growing at Any Age
It’s never too late to change your life. Every year brings new opportunities to improve, learn, and become better than before.
These lessons came from experience, mistakes, and moments of reflection. If my younger self had known them sooner, the road might have been smoother. But life has a way of teaching us exactly when we’re ready to learn.
